### “Goodbye, Democracy: Another District Gets the Chop”
Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) is calling it quits and not running for reelection. Why? Because his Memphis district got sliced and diced in the latest round of political chess, thanks to redistricting after the Supreme Court decided to take a sledgehammer to the Voting Rights Act.
Cohen, who’s served ten terms (and apparently has a pretty impressive record of winning every precinct since 2006), claims this was the hardest decision of his political life. Imagine that: a guy who’s been in office longer than most people have had their current cell phones is suddenly feeling emotional over a political game.
So, what happened? Well, Tennessee’s Republican-led Legislature decided to eliminate Cohen’s majority Black district, paving the way for an all-GOP federal delegation. Isn’t it nice when your party just decides to redraw the map to make sure your favorite candidates stay in power? And it’s not just Tennessee; several GOP states are racing to dismantle majority Black seats. Coincidence? We’re sure this is just about “fair representation.”
Cohen noted how unique it was that an African American majority district elected a white guy. Unique? Sure. But what does that really say about the state of representation? It’s almost like the system works better for certain people, and surprise, surprise, those people aren’t always the ones who need it most.
Now, Cohen is stepping aside while his primary challenger, Justin Pearson, is left to navigate an even redder battlefield. Pearson says he’s not backing down, but good luck in a district that’s been carefully tailored to make you lose.
Cohen himself said, “I’m not a quitter. But these districts were drawn to beat me.” You got that right, Steve. It’s practically a blueprint for political elimination. So, as we watch yet another layer of democracy peel away, one has to wonder: Is this really the way we want our political landscape to look? Or is this just part of the grand plan?
