### House Speaker Plays Chicken with Housing Bill, Defies D.C. Establishment
So, House Speaker Mike Johnson thinks he can just waltz into the legislative arena and push his own version of a housing affordability package, huh? Despite the White House and Senate Republicans throwing a fit about it, Johnson’s all set to stick to his guns and make the House vote on his amendments next week.
He’s not impressed with the White House’s “serious policy concerns” about his new bill. In fact, he seems to think he can just charm them into compliance. “I’ve talked to the White House. We’ll get it all straightened out,” he says, as if that’s how governance works. Spoiler alert: it’s not.
Johnson claims his bill is going to be “bipartisan” and “great for the American people.” Sure, buddy. Because those terms mean everything when you’re scrambling to get anything passed in a divided Congress. He’s also planning to fast-track this baby next Wednesday, requiring a two-thirds majority. No pressure, right?
Meanwhile, President Trump is over there playing matchmaker, trying to get everyone on the same page. He called Johnson during a meeting with Senate Republicans, urging them to hurry up and get something on the desk for him to sign. Nothing like a little presidential pressure to shake things up, especially when you’re trying to herd a bunch of cats in Congress.
So, here’s the question: will Johnson manage to pull off this legislative miracle, or will he just end up in the same pile of failed bills that litter the Capitol floor? Guess we’ll find out soon enough.
