### “Senator Thanks DHS for Money After a Disaster: Shocking, Right?” So, Sen. Thom Tillis decided to give a shout-out to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin after FEMA greenlit over $200 million to help western North Carolina recover from Hurricane Helene’s two-year-old wreckage. How magnanimous of him! I mean, it’s not like it’s the government’s job to step in after a disaster, right? But hey, let’s all applaud the bureaucratic machinery for finally doing something useful—two years later. You have to wonder, though: why is it that these funding announcements always seem to come with a side of photo ops and political backslapping? The people in western North Carolina are still dealing with the fallout from a storm that wrecked their lives, and now we’re supposed to be grateful for a check that should have been sent out ages ago. Just think about the timing. Why now? What’s changed in the last two years? Is there a political calendar at play here? In the end, it’s always nice to have a pat on the back when you finally get the help you needed. But maybe, just maybe, we should be asking why it took so long in the first place. Or should we just keep thanking our elected officials for doing the bare minimum?
