### Congress Can’t Even Agree on AI Legislation? Shocking.
So, Chuck Schumer thinks Congress might pass some sort of AI legislation this year. Spoiler alert: he’s not optimistic. The Senate minority leader dropped this little gem during an interview, basically saying that getting anything done in this Congress is like trying to catch smoke with your bare hands.
Let’s break down the circus act here. The White House has flipped its stance on AI faster than you can say “national standard.” They’re looking to roll out legislation that would squash any pesky state laws, but the reality is that House Republicans aren’t exactly thrilled about the Senate GOP’s ideas on kids’ safety online. And then there’s Senator John Thune, who’s worried that this whole national push might just trample states’ rights. You know, because protecting kids online is apparently a hot potato no one wants to touch.
On the Democratic side, it’s all over the place. There’s no consensus on how to handle AI, and the general public seems to be raising an eyebrow at the whole thing. Some Democrats are dragging their feet on preemption, hoping to wait until next year when they might be in a better position to push their agenda. Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have thrown a wrench in the works by calling for a moratorium on AI data centers until someone figures out how to keep things in check.
Schumer is trying to play the diplomat here, claiming there are “tremendous benefits” to AI while also insisting we need “guardrails.” This sounds like a classic case of wanting to have your cake and eat it too. He wants to move quickly on this, but it’s like threading a needle while blindfolded. Good luck with that.
And just for good measure, Congress is also wrestling with issues like the FISA Section 702 spy authority, which is set to expire because Democrats and the White House are apparently too busy playing tug-of-war to actually make any decisions. Oh, and the GOP is pushing ahead with a record-breaking budget for the Pentagon, because who doesn’t love a big defense bill?
It’s all very reassuring, isn’t it? So, while lawmakers fumble over AI, the rest of us are just left wondering: is anyone actually steering this ship, or are we just drifting?
