### So, Kristi Noem’s Out—Now What?
Kristi Noem, the poster child for the administration’s hardline immigration policies, has been booted from her role as secretary of Homeland Security. But surprise, surprise—this shake-up isn’t shifting the political landscape for Democrats one bit when it comes to funding the agency.
As senators shuffled in for a vote on reopening DHS, news broke that President Trump was swapping Noem for Senator Markwayne Mullin. This was great timing, right? Not really. The GOP’s latest attempt to pressure Democrats into easing up on their demands for stricter controls on ICE and CBP still flopped—51-45 against.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, never one to miss a chance to point fingers, said the issues at ICE are deeper than just one person. Translation: it’s a hot mess, and we all know it. Meanwhile, Democrats in the House are singing the same tune as they prep for their own vote on DHS funding later.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries didn’t hold back, calling Noem a disgrace. But hold your applause, because he’s also making it clear that a simple personnel swap isn’t enough. He wants bold, dramatic, transformational changes. Whatever that means.
Let’s not forget the context here. After two U.S. citizens were shot dead by federal immigration agents back in January, Democrats have been hesitant to support funding for DHS. Noem tried to spin those victims as “domestic terrorists,” which is quite the stretch, and naturally, she didn’t hold the officers accountable.
Fast forward to the last three weeks of this funding fiasco. Democrats and the White House are playing tug-of-war over proposed changes to ICE and CBP, but surprise—no breakthroughs yet. They want new rules that sound good on paper: agents without masks, clear ID display, and restrictions on where they can detain undocumented immigrants. They even want warrants signed by judges for ICE agents. Republicans are rolling their eyes at that one, calling it a nonstarter.
As Noem’s ousting made headlines, Sen. Patty Murray tried to pass a separate bill to fund parts of DHS—like the Coast Guard and TSA—while leaving out immigration enforcement. Because nothing says “we care” like funding essential services while ignoring the elephant in the room.
While all this is happening, ICE and CBP are still out there doing their thing, thanks to funding from a massive bill Republicans passed last summer. Murray, clearly fed up, stated that TSA shouldn’t suffer just because Republicans refuse to agree on basic standards for ICE and Border Patrol. But hey, who needs accountability when you can just keep throwing money at the problem?
Senate Majority Leader John Thune seemed to think Noem’s departure would open the door for serious negotiations. Yeah, good luck with that. Schumer made it clear that Republicans need to change their tune if they want to get anything done.
Rep. Rosa DeLauro didn’t mince words either. She thinks the whole Republican approach isn’t serious. Shocker! It’s almost as if people in power are more interested in playing politics than actually solving problems.
So, will this shake-up lead to actual change? Or are we just spinning our wheels while the same old game continues? One thing’s for sure: the chaos isn’t going away anytime soon.
