If the U.S. wants the next wave of bright minds and daring doers to keep flocking here, it’s not enough to just put up a “no vacancy” sign at the border. Apparently, we need to also wrap ourselves in the cozy blanket of our so-called “American Dream.” That’s right, folks, we’re talking about the same dream that has attracted people for generations—because who wouldn’t want a slice of that pie?
But here’s the kicker: what exactly is the promise we’re defending? The constant political bickering? The crushing student debt? Or maybe the fact that you can work your fingers to the bone and still struggle to make ends meet? Let’s not pretend that everyone’s experience here is a fairytale.
It’s almost like the real message is, “Come on in, but don’t expect us to make it easy for you.” So, while we’re busy building walls—both physical and metaphorical—maybe we should also think about what keeps the lights on in this so-called land of opportunity.
