**Headline: House GOP Says No Thanks to TSA’s Sneaky New Fee**
House Republicans are stepping in to block the TSA’s shiny new $45 fee for travelers without a REAL ID or approved ID. Apparently, they think charging people to verify their identity at airport security is a bit much. Who knew?
In a bill that’s about to get a committee review, they’ve slapped a ban on TSA collecting any fees related to “vetting travelers arriving without acceptable identification.” Because, you know, verifying identities used to be a free service — especially for those unfortunate souls who lost their ID during a hurricane or had it stolen.
The GOP isn’t shy about calling out the TSA for its new ConfirmID fee, which they claim has no legal basis. They point out that this new program is a massive money grab compared to the old system. In their own words, charging for ID checks is “over an order of magnitude more expensive” than what it used to cost. So, thanks for that, TSA.
Of course, the TSA isn’t just going to let this slide. They’re defending the fee, saying it’s only fair that those who can’t show proper ID should pay for the extra security measures. Adam Stahl, the acting deputy administrator, insists that the majority of travelers do show up with acceptable IDs, but hey, someone has to cover the cost of those few who don’t. Why not make it the travelers themselves?
In the same breath, Republicans are also pushing TSA to find ways to save money by working with private companies. It’s almost like they’re trying to get the TSA to act like a private business. Remember when the Trump administration wanted to force smaller airports to use private firms for security? Yeah, this isn’t quite the same thing.
As for the numbers, the House GOP is looking to hand TSA $11.2 billion, which is a drop from last year. They want to cut spending on screening personnel while boosting funding for the Screening Partnership Program by $41 million. So, they’re slashing jobs but somehow increasing tech maintenance costs. Makes perfect sense, right?
Oh, and just to make things clear, the committee doesn’t even mention the new ConfirmID fee in their budget estimates. It’s like they’re trying to pretend it doesn’t exist. Isn’t politics fun?
