### House GOP’s Chaotic Two-Week Countdown: Can They Get Their Act Together?
House Republicans are gearing up for a wild sprint over the next two weeks, desperately trying to show they can actually accomplish something before taking another break. Spoiler alert: it’s not looking great.
First up, we have the FISA debacle. GOP leaders want to quickly extend Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to give the Senate time to reauthorize a key spying tool before the April 20 deadline. Sounds simple, right? Well, not if you’re a conservative who thinks the government shouldn’t be snooping on noncitizens without a warrant. Two Republican reps, Anna Paulina Luna and Keith Self, might just throw a wrench in this whole operation if they don’t get their way. Self even went so far as to say that FISA needs amendments, which can’t bode well for Speaker Mike Johnson, who can lose only one vote before chaos ensues.
Next, there’s the housing crisis. Apparently, some hard-liners are more focused on their pet projects than addressing rising living costs. They’re holding up a Senate-approved affordable housing bill because it doesn’t include their desired ban on a central bank digital currency. Talk about missing the point. Instead of tackling actual voter concerns, they want to strip the bill of “socialist” provisions, which essentially guarantees it’ll go nowhere. Good job, team!
And let’s not forget the looming “SAVE” revolt. Some hard-line Republicans are threatening to block any Senate-passed bill until the Senate passes the SAVE America Act, which is basically a wish list of partisan demands. Rep. Luna is ready to start her blockade by voting against a Senate-backed measure to extend a small business program, because why not make things even messier?
Meanwhile, the Senate is about to kick off its debate on the SAVE America Act, which Trump has dubbed his “No. 1 priority.” But don’t hold your breath for any dramatic filibuster; Republicans are kicking things off with a vote on new voter ID requirements instead. Exciting stuff.
As if that’s not enough, Speaker Johnson is hosting Trump and Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin for a luncheon. Because when you’re knee-deep in legislative chaos, nothing says “let’s fix things” like a fancy lunch.
So, as the House Republicans scramble to show they can govern, one has to wonder: do they even know what they’re doing, or is this just another chaotic episode of “Let’s Pretend We’re in Charge”?
