### Judge Orders ICE to Let Priests Do Their Thing—Who Knew?
So, a federal judge has now stepped in to tell ICE that they can’t just bar religious leaders from visiting detainees. Apparently, this is a big deal because, according to U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman, it goes against some federal law about religious freedom. Shocking, right? Who would’ve thought that denying priests access to those locked up might be a tad unconstitutional?
The judge pointed out that for years, religious visits had been allowed at the Broadview detention center. But now, it seems, that’s all changed. ICE thought they could just throw a blanket ban on religious leaders, but surprise! It turns out the law still matters in some places.
Maybe this whole situation could have been avoided if someone had bothered to think about the implications of their policies. Or maybe they just hoped nobody would notice. Either way, it’s a bit rich that it took a judge to remind them that people have rights—even if they’re behind bars.
Is it too much to ask for a little common sense when dealing with vulnerable populations? Or are we just going to keep seeing how far we can stretch the limits of “enforcement”?
