### Finally, Some Family Time for Immigrants—After Protests, of Course
So, New Jersey’s Gov. Mikie Sherrill just announced that the Department of Homeland Security is allowing family visits at the Delaney Hall Detention Center in Newark again. How generous of them, right? Apparently, it took a few protests for them to remember that maybe immigrants deserve a little human connection.
Starting today, they’ll kick off limited visitation at noon, and by tomorrow, they’ll roll out regular visiting hours again. It’s amazing how quickly things can change when enough people make noise.
But let’s pause and think: Why did this need protests to happen in the first place? It seems like a no-brainer that people should be able to see their family members. Yet here we are, applauding a half-step forward after a whole lot of fuss.
Isn’t it funny how these institutions only start caring when they’re backed into a corner? What else is on the chopping block that we’re just not hearing about?
