### “So, We’re Just Wingin’ It for the World Cup, Huh?”
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has decided to let us in on a little secret: the big plans to secure the upcoming World Cup haven’t exactly been cooking on all cylinders. Why? Apparently, a 76-day funding lapse has put a serious damper on things.
In a press conference that could probably use a little more urgency, Mullin revealed that the department’s efforts have been less “proactive” and more “let’s hope for the best.” This kind of nonchalance about national security for a major global event is comforting, right?
Mullin stood next to Rep. Mark Alford in Kansas City, where they presumably discussed how to keep everyone safe while the clock ticks down to the tournament. But hey, who needs a solid plan when you can just cross your fingers and hope everything goes smoothly?
It’s almost as if a lack of funding—something that seems to happen with alarming frequency in government—has real-world consequences. Who would have thought? But don’t worry, they’re “working on it.”
So, as we gear up for a huge sporting event, let’s just remember: the folks in charge are doing their best with an “oops, our bad” approach to security. What could possibly go wrong?
