### Democrats Skip Trump’s Speech Because Why Not?
A group of Democrats has decided to skip President Trump’s upcoming State of the Union address. Instead, they’ll be at a counter-rally on the National Mall. Because apparently, standing in front of a bunch of cameras isn’t worth it unless it’s on their terms.
This isn’t a one-time thing; these lawmakers have a history of skipping Trump’s big events. They missed his first two inaugurations too. It’s like a rebellious club where the membership requirements include ignoring the president and making a big show about it. Senators like Ed Markey, Jeff Merkley, and Chris Murphy are on the guest list. So are several House members, including Pramila Jayapal and Delia Ramirez, proving that when it comes to Trump, some Democrats can’t resist a good protest.
Murphy, in his always-dramatic style, claims that attending the speech would “put a veneer of legitimacy on the corruption and lawlessness” of Trump’s presidency. Because, of course, the real issue is what’s going on at the podium, not in the country. Ansari, who stormed out of Trump’s last address, is bringing a guest who’s had a run-in with the administration’s immigration policies. Nothing says “honesty” like a rally filled with grievances.
The liberal group MoveOn is hosting this little get-together, along with other organizations that think they’re the arbiters of what’s “honest” in America. Meanwhile, the White House shrugged off the boycott, pointing out that Democrats have made a habit of trying to block anything the administration tries to do. Shocking, right?
It’s almost cute how some Democrats are still trying to act like their boycott is a bold stance against Trump. Out of the 31 House Democrats who boycotted his first inauguration, only seven decided to attend the second one. You can practically hear them saying, “We’re really over this, but we’ll keep pretending it matters.”
As Trump prepares to deliver his speech amidst a partial government shutdown, some Republicans are worried about the optics. But let’s be real—this is also a chance for them to change the narrative from bad headlines to positive economic messaging. Because who doesn’t love a good distraction?
So, here’s a thought: if the Democrats are so concerned about the “state of the union,” maybe they should try showing up for the conversation instead of staging their own little protest party. Or is that too much to ask?
