**Headline: Senate GOP Hits the Snooze Button on Immigration Bill, Blames Trump’s Drama**
The Senate GOP has decided to hit the brakes on voting for an immigration enforcement bill this week. They’re just going to kick the can down the road until after the Memorial Day break, conveniently missing a deadline set by Trump himself. Who knew a major political party could be so good at procrastination?
Senate Majority Leader John Thune casually informed his colleagues that they’re all heading home because, surprise, surprise, there’s a massive divide among Republicans over this issue. Turns out, the main purpose of the bill—shoveling billions of dollars into Immigration and Customs Enforcement—has become a battlefield over some political hot potatoes that have nothing to do with border security.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche tried to calm the waters regarding a brand-new $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund, but it seems the GOP was having none of it. There was even a $1 billion allocation for the Secret Service that had to get tossed out because, apparently, Republicans can’t agree on anything without throwing a tantrum.
Thune himself lamented that this whole situation is a lot harder than it should be and suggested that maybe, just maybe, the White House should have consulted them before dropping this bombshell. It’s almost like they expect cooperation in a party that can’t agree on lunch.
Meanwhile, GOP leaders are now waiting on the administration to figure out how to salvage the immigration bill. Thune made it clear that they’re looking for help because, shockingly enough, they have members who are anxious about both the timing and the actual content of the bill.
Blanche met with Senate Republicans in a bid to ease the tensions, but reports suggest it didn’t exactly go smoothly. In fact, he was apparently grilled by a bunch of cranky senators.
While the immigration enforcement bill doesn’t include the funding for this controversial new initiative, there’s always a way to sneak it in with just 51 votes. So, while Republicans are spinning their wheels and pointing fingers, it seems like the only thing they’re really good at is kicking the can down the road.
Is it too much to ask for Congress to act like they actually care about the issues at hand? Or is waiting for the next big drama just more fun?
