Real Madrid have announced that Xabi Alonso has left his role as manager by mutual agreement. The statement comes less than 24 hours after Los Blancos lost the Spanish Supercup final to Barcelona in Saudi Arabia.

The Spaniard was appointed in the summer after Carlo Ancelotti left the club following the end of the 2024/25 season. The former Bayer Leverkusen coach took charge from the FIFA Club World Cup in June, where they were eliminated by PSG in the semifinal.

Alonso managed 34 matches at the club, winning 24 and losing just six. However, the Spanish giants have decided to part ways with the coach as they sit four points behind league leaders Barcelona.

Real Madrid have confirmed that Álvaro Arbeloa will be the new coach at Santiago Bernabeu. The Spaniard has been Castilla’s coach since June 2025, and has worked in the club’s youth academy since 2020.

The statement released by Los Blancos highlights that the manager has been doing extremely well in the youth setup, having won silverware in every season at the club. The Spaniard won the Infantil A in the 2020-2021 season, the Cadete A in 2021-2022, and made a hat-trick of title wins with Juvenil A from 2022 to 2025.

Arbeloa played 238 matches for Los Blancos, winning the league title once, two UEFA Champions Leagues, and as many Copa del Rey titles.
