### Congress Wants to Ban Betting on Politics—Because Apparently They’re Not Already Making Enough Money So, Congress is stepping up to the plate with a brand-new bill that aims to stop lawmakers and their families from betting on prediction markets related to government actions and political outcomes. Because we all know how concerned they are about ethics and not cashing in on insider info. Wisconsin Republican Bryan Steil introduced this legislation, which proposes hefty fines of at least $2,000 for violators, along with the loss of any winnings. Sounds like a solid plan, right? Just when we thought politicians couldn’t look any more hypocritical, here they are, pretending to care about the integrity of their offices while also being the ones who could profit from it. Steil claims that “the American people deserve to know their Member of Congress is not profiting off insider information.” That’s rich coming from a group that loves to write the rules while playing the game. Shouldn’t they be focused on actually doing their jobs instead of trying to cash in on the chaos they create? The push for this bill comes amid a growing concern about insider trading in prediction markets, particularly after a U.S. soldier was charged for allegedly using confidential information to make trades on the capture of Nicolás Maduro. It’s like a soap opera, but this time the plot twist is that Congress is suddenly acting as if they care about the rules. The Senate even voted unanimously to ban their own members from using these markets. Talk about a sudden change of heart! And let’s not forget former Rep. George Santos, who’s under investigation for his own trading activities. It’s like a reality show where the cast members are the only people who don’t realize they’re being watched. At the end of the day, this legislation seems more like a band-aid on a gunshot wound. If Congress really wanted to clean up its act, they might want to start with their own paychecks instead of worrying about whether or not they can place a bet on the next big policy showdown. What’s next? A law preventing them from betting on their own re-election? Don’t hold your breath.
