### Democracy? Only If It’s Convenient.
So, it turns out fewer Americans think democracy is a core part of what makes America, well, America. A recent poll shows only 66 percent of people consider a “democratically elected government” to be “extremely important” or “very important” as we gear up for the country’s 250th birthday bash.
Let’s break that down: two-thirds of folks are still somewhat on board with democracy, but that leaves a solid chunk—34 percent—who either think it’s not that big of a deal or just don’t care anymore. Isn’t that a comforting thought as we celebrate our “freedoms”?
What’s missing here is any real discussion about why opinions might be shifting. Are people disillusioned by the political circus? Fed up with representatives who seem more interested in their next social media post than actual governance? Just throwing it out there, but maybe there’s a connection.
And let’s not even start on the fact that the poll doesn’t bother to ask what these people actually want instead. Autocracy? Oligarchy? A benevolent dictator who lets you binge-watch your favorite shows uninterrupted?
As we roll into this anniversary, it begs the question: if democracy is on shaky ground, what exactly are we celebrating? Or is it just a good excuse to have a party?
