### Here We Go Again: Redrawing Maps to Fit the Narrative Well, folks, it looks like Republican governors in Alabama and Louisiana are gearing up for a little map-drawing party. Why? Because the Supreme Court just shook things up with a ruling that made it a bit harder to stretch the Voting Rights Act into new territory. So, what’s their response? Call the state lawmakers back to session to redraw congressional maps. You know, because nothing says democracy like a good old-fashioned reshuffle whenever it suits you. Alabama’s lawmakers are set to gather in Montgomery next week to discuss how to tinker with the state’s congressional districts ahead of the upcoming elections. It’s almost as if they think that changing the lines on a map will magically resolve their issues. Spoiler alert: it won’t. Let’s not forget, this whole redistricting charade is happening because the Supreme Court decided to rein in some of the more extreme interpretations of the VRA. But instead of taking a step back and asking why they need to redraw the maps in the first place, they’re just charging ahead as if it’s business as usual. Here’s a thought: maybe they could spend more time addressing the actual concerns of voters instead of playing cartographer. But I guess that would be too simple, wouldn’t it? So, as they assemble to draw their little lines, one can’t help but wonder: when will we stop treating redistricting like a game of Connect Four?
