### More Books Banned? Shocking. Said No One Ever.
So, a shiny new report just dropped, and surprise, surprise: nonfiction books are getting the boot from U.S. schools. According to this riveting piece of news from PEN America, the number of titles yanked from libraries and classrooms doubled last year. Yes, doubled. That’s a real head-scratcher, isn’t it?
They claim that between July 2024 and June 2025, a whopping 3,743 unique books were removed. Let that sink in for a second. That’s a lot of titles being “stripped away,” as they put it. But here’s where it gets interesting: the report doesn’t bother to explain why these books are being banned. Was it too much truth in those pages? Did someone get offended? Who knows!
You’d think they might include some actual voices—like, I don’t know, teachers or students—who might shed light on this fiasco. But no, let’s just throw numbers around and hope it stirs up some outrage.
And let’s not gloss over the irony here. These bans are often couched in terms of protecting kids, yet nobody seems to consider that maybe, just maybe, kids should be allowed to read and think for themselves. But hey, why question motives when you can just jump on the fear bandwagon?
At the end of the day, it’s all very convenient to highlight the number of books banned without asking the tough questions. So, are we really protecting our kids, or are we just making sure they only read what we approve of?
