### Where’s Tom Kean? The GOP’s Vanishing Act
So, Rep. Tom Kean Jr. has gone MIA for a month, and nobody seems to know why. His team claims he’s dealing with some mysterious health issues, but that’s about as specific as it gets. He hasn’t voted since early March, and he’s missed nearly 50 roll calls. That’s right—fifty.
His fellow Republicans, including Reps. Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew, have reached out to him. But guess what? Silence. Not even a “Hey, I’m alive” text back. Van Drew described it as “radio silence,” which sounds dramatic but is probably pretty accurate.
Even other GOP members are in the dark. Rep. Don Bacon, for instance, only realized Kean was absent when he went looking for him on the House floor. “I didn’t know it was that long,” he admitted. It’s nice to know they’re all so concerned, but it also raises eyebrows about how closely they’re actually paying attention to one of their own.
Kean’s consultant assures us he’ll be back to a full schedule soon, and his allies seem optimistic. Union County GOP Chair Carlos Santos admits he doesn’t have the full story but insists he’s been told Kean will make a “full recovery.” Sounds reassuring, right?
Meanwhile, Kean’s seat is a hotbed of political tension. He’s running for reelection in a district that’s been a toss-up, with Trump barely winning it last time around. Now, the Trump administration is opening an immigration detention center right in his district while pulling funding for a crucial infrastructure project. Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place.
Some believe voters will forget about Kean’s absence by November, citing that everyone understands unexpected health issues. But that all depends on how well he can spin this story when the time comes.
And let’s not forget, Democrats have noticed his absence too. Rep. Rob Menendez expressed concern but, like everyone else, is still waiting for a sign of life from Kean.
So, will voters care about a missing congressman come fall? That’s the million-dollar question, but one thing’s for sure: this whole situation stinks of political spin. Maybe it’s time to ask what’s really going on here.
