### Rick Scott Plays Hardball with Coast Guard Promotions for Florida Shipbuilder So, Florida Senator Rick Scott has decided to put a wrench in the gears of Coast Guard promotions. Why? He’s throwing a tantrum over a shipbuilder in his state. Yes, a senator is holding up military promotions because of some local business drama. Sounds like a great use of Senate time, doesn’t it? Scott’s grand strategy involves blocking quick confirmation of hundreds of promotions, which normally sail through with little fuss. Instead of a smooth unanimous vote, he’s forcing Majority Leader John Thune to schedule lengthy roll call votes. How noble of him to make everyone’s lives more complicated. He claims he’s been at this since Trump was in office, trying to play peacemaker between the Coast Guard and the shipbuilder. Apparently, he’s met with “everybody” he can find but hasn’t bothered to give specifics on which shipbuilder he’s defending. But let’s be real—his long-standing love affair with Panama City’s Eastern Shipbuilding Group makes it pretty clear where he’s placing his bets. Last year, former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem decided to scrap plans for two boats, and Eastern Shipbuilding has since announced it would halt work on the last two due to “significant financial strain.” So, it’s a bit rich for Scott to demand focus from the Coast Guard when his favored shipbuilder seems to be sinking faster than their boats. Meanwhile, Thune is scrambling to get a personnel package together, which includes confirming more of Trump’s nominees, while also juggling a potential DHS shutdown and some expiring surveillance powers. Because who doesn’t love a good game of political whack-a-mole? In the end, it’s hard not to roll your eyes. Is this really the best way to ensure our Coast Guard is properly staffed? Or is this just the latest example of a senator prioritizing local business interests over national security? You decide.
