### “Government Spy Powers Hang by a Thread—GOP Can’t Agree on Anything” So, the House GOP is stuck trying to figure out how to extend government spy powers under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Sounds like a real nail-biter, right? They’re racing against the clock with a deadline looming, but instead of getting their act together, they hit the brakes. GOP leaders are in a real pickle here. They want a straightforward extension, which President Trump has made clear is a priority, but some hardliners in the party are saying, “Not so fast!” It’s almost like they’re playing a game of political chicken, hoping to find a middle ground that doesn’t involve actual compromise. The plan is to reconvene the House Rules Committee late at night because nothing screams urgency like a meeting at 10:15 p.m. Apparently, they think they’re making progress—because, you know, five people said so. It seems House leaders are now willing to consider adding some amendments to the mix, like requiring warrants for surveillance. Who would’ve thought that was a good idea? And while they’re at it, these hardliners want to sneak in a ban on central bank digital currencies. Because why not combine two unrelated issues? It’s like a political buffet—pick what you want, leave the rest. House Speaker Mike Johnson is keen to get a clean 18-month extension on the floor, but a dozen hardliners are ready to throw a tantrum if they don’t get their amendments. Let’s break this down: GOP leaders can afford to lose a couple of votes in committee, but once it hits the House floor, the stakes get higher. Some members are openly saying they might just derail the whole thing. Rep. Ralph Norman even laid it out: he won’t support the clean extension unless they add a warrant amendment. It’s like they’re bargaining with a toddler—“I want cookies with my dinner!” The irony? If they allow a vote on the warrant amendment, it’ll likely pass, which would go against Trump’s call for a clean extension. It’s like a comedy of errors, with GOP leaders scratching their heads over how to please everyone while trying to keep their party from imploding. Some GOP members were invited to a meeting at the White House to discuss this mess, but they decided to attend their own Freedom Caucus meeting instead. Priorities, am I right? Meanwhile, Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan, who’s supposedly on Team Trump, is also at that Freedom Caucus meeting, which just complicates things even more. Now, there’s talk of a backup plan for a shorter extension—maybe 12 months—but most hardliners say that’s not going to cut it. Rep. Andrew Clyde succinctly stated what many are thinking: “A clean extension has no chance.” In the end, House GOP leaders are considering just throwing the clean extension on the floor and letting Trump deal with the fallout. It’s almost like watching a reality show where the contestants can’t even agree on the rules. So, will they figure it out before the deadline? Or will they just keep kicking the can down the road? Because at this rate, who knows?
