### So, They Think This is a Watergate-Level Scandal?
Jack Smith’s office has decided to dig into President Trump’s circle, looking for links between his congressional buddies and the supposed plot to overturn the 2020 election. Shocking, right? Just when you thought the election drama was behind us, here comes a fresh batch of emails from January 2023 that show GOP lawmakers chatting it up with Trump’s so-called co-conspirators, like Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman.
These cozy communications are now the reason Smith’s team wants to snoop through the phone logs of a dozen Republican officials. We’re talking big names like former Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Sen. Lindsey Graham, along with ex-Rep. Lee Zeldin—who, by the way, is now running Trump’s EPA. How convenient that some lawmakers are only just being brought into the spotlight now.
Zeldin’s office didn’t bother responding to requests for comments, which is probably for the best. Who wants to answer questions about potentially shady dealings? Meanwhile, Sen. Ted Cruz is waving the red flag, claiming Smith’s mission is a political hit job aimed at taking down everyone on the other side. Because, of course, the idea that anyone might be held accountable for attempting to undermine democracy is just too outrageous.
Cruz likened Smith’s investigations to Watergate, as if we’re supposed to take that seriously. Sure, let’s compare a riotous insurrection to some tapes and cover-ups from the ’70s. The documents released show that Smith’s office is looking for any info that might help build a case against those involved in the January 6 chaos. Guess what? That includes everyone from Mark Meadows to John Ratcliffe, who’s now running the CIA.
Smith’s office apparently feels justified in going after phone logs because they’re hoping to piece together a puzzle about Trump’s actions and intentions. But really, it’s just a giant fishing expedition dressed up as a legal investigation. They even peeked at a report from the Democratic-led House committee on January 6, suggesting that these parallel inquiries have a nice little dance going on.
And let’s not forget Kash Patel, who’s now the FBI director but was once a target in Smith’s investigation. It’s all coming together like a bad TV drama, isn’t it? An FBI spokesperson once claimed the bureau was “weaponized” under previous leadership, but suddenly when it’s Smith doing the digging, it’s all above board.
As the circus continues, Democrats are defending Smith and pushing for public hearings. Apparently, they think it’s a good idea to air out all this drama. Meanwhile, Grassley is hinting that Smith might have to face the full Judiciary panel soon. So, stay tuned for more political theater, folks.
Is anyone else exhausted by this endless cycle of investigations?
