### “Senator Regrets Insult, But Not Enough to Actually Apologize”
Senator Markwayne Mullin just offered us a masterclass in half-hearted regrets during his confirmation hearing to become the next Homeland Security Secretary. He “regretted” calling Alex Pretti “deranged” — but don’t hold your breath waiting for a heartfelt apology to Pretti’s family. Apparently, he’s only willing to acknowledge his words when it’s convenient.
So, what did Mullin actually say? He seemed to have no qualms labeling Pretti a “domestic terrorist” after his tragic death at the hands of federal immigration agents. Now, he’s backpedaling a bit, but only because he’s in front of a committee. Talk about a selective conscience.
When pressed by a Democrat for a real apology, Mullin dodged like a pro. “If I’m proven wrong, then I will,” he declared, as if waiting for the investigation to serve as his personal get-out-of-jail-free card. Meanwhile, he absolutely refused to take back his earlier comments about Renee Good, another U.S. citizen killed by immigration enforcement. Mullin seems pretty set on defending agents who pull the trigger, insisting they were justified.
It’s worth noting that while he’s ready to stand by his words when it suits him, he’s also not shy about blaming the Trump administration for blocking investigations — you know, the same administration he was part of, which makes it all the more rich.
At the end of the day, we have a senator who’s willing to regret only the things that might cost him votes while sticking to his guns when it comes to justifying deadly force. Makes you wonder: is he more concerned about his constituents or his own reputation?
