### GOP Election Bill: Thune Chooses the Safe Route, but Will It Matter? Senate Majority Leader John Thune is gearing up to push a Republican-only election bill next week. But instead of going for the dramatic “talking filibuster” that some hard-liners are clamoring for, he’s opting for the usual path. Shocking, right? This decision comes after months of Republicans throwing shade at each other over how to handle the SAVE America Act. Apparently, Elon Musk and some MAGA influencers have been busy pressuring Thune and his pals online, hoping to bypass the Democrats’ resistance. Because, of course, social media campaigns have a reputation for solving complex legislative issues. Thune says he plans to bring the bill up next week but isn’t keen on sharing how that will happen—probably because he knows it’s going to be a mess. Trump jumped into the fray, insisting that passing this bill would “guarantee the midterms” for Republicans. Sure, let’s just ignore the fact that the bill is likely to flop in the face of solid Democratic opposition. The kicker? Thune’s plan is to stick to the standard 60-vote threshold. So, surprise, surprise, it’ll probably tank. Despite some Republicans dreaming of a talking filibuster—where Democrats would have to endlessly debate to block the bill—Thune admitted that there just isn’t enough support for that approach. He pointed out that if they went that route, it could lead to endless debates and amendments that would drag on for months. So, it looks like we’re stuck with the traditional route, which is basically a fancy way of saying, “Nothing’s really going to change.” In the end, Thune’s right: the votes just aren’t there. But who needs reality when you can spin a narrative about fighting the good fight? Isn’t politics just the best kind of theater?
