### “GOP’s DHS Funding Proposal: Too Little, Too Late?”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has declared the GOP’s latest pitch on Homeland Security funding as “woefully inadequate.” Shocking, right? Apparently, the White House isn’t interested in playing ball with the Democrats on some pretty basic requests. Who would have thought?
With the clock ticking down to a DHS shutdown, Jeffries insists that the Republican offer falls short in several areas. We’re talking about judicial warrants, standards for detention centers, and even independent investigations into excessive force. You know, the little stuff that should be a given. When asked whether the Trump administration would back a ban on masks for federal agents, Jeffries responded with a classic dodge: “That’s an open question.” In other words, don’t hold your breath.
Jeffries went on to point out that the GOP doesn’t seem keen on making ICE agents identifiable like other law enforcement personnel. Because, of course, transparency is such a tough ask.
Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader John Thune is out here playing the optimist, suggesting there’s still room for compromise. He claims at least seven Senate Democrats need to come to the table to avoid a shutdown. Funny how he believes both sides have their “non-negotiables.” What’s non-negotiable? Maybe just basic standards for how we treat people in detention.
Chuck Schumer, the Senate Minority Leader, chimed in with a cautious tone, urging Republicans to step it up soon. His version of “common sense” is simply asking ICE to follow the same rules as most law enforcement agencies. You’d think that would be a no-brainer, but here we are.
So, as we inch closer to a potential government shutdown, one has to wonder: are we really surprised that the usual suspects are squabbling over what should be common decency?
