**GOP in Chaos: Can They Get Their Act Together?**
So, the House Rules Committee decided to push a plan forward to break the Republican Party’s latest impasse. Surprise, surprise, it’s a partisan move designed to set up a $1.1 trillion defense bill, along with a few other GOP goodies, for floor debate. But hold onto your hats; they might still be in for a bumpy ride.
Speaker Mike Johnson, in his infinite wisdom, thinks that cramming the Pentagon funding bill together with the much-maligned SAVE America Act will satisfy the hard-liners who’ve been throwing a tantrum. Apparently, the idea is to toss everything into one legislative blender and hope it gets through. This is supposed to make the Senate finally get off its behind and pass the elections bill that’s been stalled for months. Spoiler alert: it’s not working.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, one of the hard-liners, has already thrown a wrench in Johnson’s plans, claiming it’s just not enough. She might even rally her crew to shoot down the measure when it hits the floor. And let’s not forget that other hard-liners are ready to stir the pot over various other issues. Sounds like a fun day ahead for the GOP!
On the other side of the aisle, Rep. James McGovern isn’t holding back, calling the whole merger idea “a big waste of time.” He tried to get the provision to combine the two bills removed, but, shockingly, it didn’t go his way.
Meanwhile, in the Senate, they’re busy crafting their own version of the defense bill, and guess what? The SAVE Act is likely to be tossed out of negotiations. McGovern even had the audacity to predict that there’s “zero percent chance” the SAVE Act makes it into the Pentagon bill. Bold claim!
And let’s not ignore the fact that most Democrats are poised to oppose this hefty price tag, calling it wasteful. They’re gearing up to debate a whopping 312 amendments, which include a delightful mix of GOP proposals like preventing transgender individuals from serving in the military and blocking aid to Ukraine.
Oh, and Democrats wanted to cut $150 billion from the bill and limit the war with Iran, but that idea was shot down faster than you can say “government spending.”
So, what’s the takeaway? The GOP is a mess and can’t seem to get on the same page. Will they ever get their act together, or is this just another day in the circus?
