**Headline:** GOP Can’t Get Its Act Together Without Trump, Shockingly
The GOP is in such disarray that they’re now looking to their most reliable problem-solver—Donald Trump—to rescue them from their own mess. Who would’ve thought that the party of “personal responsibility” would need a lifeline like this?
So, what’s the issue? It seems the House is basically closed for business because various factions within the party can’t agree on anything. Meanwhile, Speaker Mike Johnson is trying to keep the lights on by extending a surveillance law and getting a farm bill passed. Spoiler alert: good luck with that.
In the Senate, frustration is bubbling over. Apparently, some Senate Republicans and Trump supporters are fed up with the House for dragging its feet on a critical Department of Homeland Security funding bill, especially after a recent shooting incident that reminded everyone how important security really is. But instead of getting on with it, Johnson wants to play around with the bill, which only prolongs the 74-day partial shutdown. Because that’s what we need—more delays.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, usually the diplomat, is losing his patience. He’s directly telling House Republicans they need to get their act together and suggesting that Trump should step in and give them a nudge. Because clearly, a little presidential arm-twisting is what these folks need.
And what do House Republicans think? They’re still slinging mud at the Senate’s plan, which they’ve already voted on twice without issue. Thune’s not even shy about calling them out, asking, “What’s your alternative?” Good question, John.
Trump has been somewhat active, sending out messages on social media urging support for a budget plan to bolster immigration enforcement—because, of course, that’s what we all want to hear about while the government is in chaos. His budget office even put out a memo, but it looks like that’s not enough to convince House hard-liners who want to throw in every other conservative pet project into the mix.
We’re also treated to the spectacle of Johnson trying to appease the far-right by attaching a ban on government-sponsored digital currency to a surveillance law extension. Spoiler: Thune thinks this is a “bad idea” that “is not happening.” Sounds like a real recipe for success, right?
Meanwhile, one House Republican candidly expressed that Johnson’s plan is, well, “batshit.” And they’re not alone. Many are baffled that Johnson is pushing other bills while the DHS funding issue remains unresolved.
The House GOP leaders are itching to present a revised DHS funding bill on Thursday, but only after they deal with a separate budget resolution. A fun little game of who can drag their feet longer.
Most Republicans think the hard-liners will back down if Trump just applies some pressure. So, here we are, waiting for a former president to swoop in to save the day.
In the end, it’s hard not to roll your eyes at this whole situation. It’s almost as if they’re testing the limits of incompetence. How many reminders do they need that their job is to keep the government running? Maybe we should just let Trump handle it—after all, he seems to be the only one with a plan. Or is that just wishful thinking?
