### Senate Wants to Spend $2.8 Million on AI Licenses? Great Idea… Not.
So, here we go again. The Senate’s cybersecurity chief is asking for a cool $2.8 million to expand AI licenses for Capitol Hill staff. Apparently, there’s a growing appetite in Congress for using AI in their daily grind, and who wouldn’t want to throw money at that?
Jennifer Hemingway, the Senate Sergeant at Arms, told a subcommittee that about 10% of Senate users have already dabbled in the free versions of AI tools. Her solution? Move everyone to the paid versions so they can “protect Senate data.” Because, you know, nothing says “data protection” like throwing cash at a bunch of tech licenses.
Back in March, the Senate gave the thumbs up to tools like Google’s Gemini chat, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot for official use. The catch? Only the paid versions, of course. Meanwhile, House staff are already using these tools under their own internal guidelines — but why let that stop the Senate from reinventing the wheel?
Hemingway’s team is busy assessing about 40 AI tools, presumably calculating which ones will waste the most taxpayer money. She’s going to present recommendations to the AI Governance Board, because obviously, that’s what we need — another layer of bureaucracy.
When asked about the one-license-per-user policy, Hemingway explained it’s about incentivizing staff to use the secure versions. But if there’s “demand” for more licenses, they’re totally open to discussing it. You know, just a casual $2.8 million budget request for some “resource issues.”
So, what’s the takeaway? The Senate is all set to spend millions on AI licenses while trying to convince us it’s for our own good. Meanwhile, it seems like they might just be trying to catch up to the House. Isn’t it charming how they always manage to make everything more complicated — and expensive?
