### Here We Go Again: More Money for Ukraine, Less Sense for Us
So, it looks like Congress is gearing up to throw more cash at Ukraine while slapping some sanctions on Russia. A group of lawmakers, with a surprising amount of excitement, managed to get enough signatures to push this “Ukraine Support Act” to a vote. Yes, that’s right—218 signatures, and now we’re all supposed to cheer for the bipartisan effort.
Rep. Kevin Kiley from California stepped up to deliver that magic 218th signature, effectively saying, “Let’s ignore the party leaders and just do this.” Because who wouldn’t want to sidestep the folks in charge, right?
Democrats, led by Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, have been itching to get this vote on the floor since last year. And now, they’re planning to make it happen in early June. Because why wait when you can add to the pile of problems already facing Speaker Mike Johnson? He’s already juggling a bunch of discharge petitions this Congress and trying to rally his party around an immigration bill that, spoiler alert, isn’t going anywhere.
Meanwhile, a couple of centrist Republicans, Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick and Don Bacon, have been on this Ukraine bandwagon for months. Fitzpatrick even took a moment to send a heartfelt message to Ukraine: “Help is on the way.” That’s nice, but it makes you wonder if anyone’s asking where all this “help” is actually coming from.
The bill proposes a neat little $1.3 billion in aid for Ukraine and some shiny new sanctions for Russia. It’s a real feel-good move, reaffirming our love for Ukraine and the ever-important NATO. Because, obviously, what we need in a world full of issues is to keep pouring money into foreign conflicts while our own country deals with… well, a lot.
So, as this bill makes its way through Congress, one has to wonder: Is this really support for Ukraine, or just another headline grabber to distract us from the mess at home?
