The Basketball Federation of Slovenia, KZS, confirmed a unanimous decision of the Executive Board, including president Matej Erjavec, to retain Aleksandar Sekulic as the head coach of the men’s national team for the next two years.

“I accept the decision of the Executive Board of the Basketball Federation of Slovenia with great respect and responsibility,” the 47-year-old tactician reacted to Tuesday’s announcement.

Sekulic was appointed as the selector in 2020. He has since coached Luka Doncic and the remaining international players in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the EuroBasket 2022, the FIBA World Cup 2023, the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Piraeus 2024, and the EuroBasket 2025.

“Continuing to work as the head coach of the Slovenian men’s national team is a great honor for me, but at the same time a clear commitment to basketball, the players, and the country we represent,” he said.

Up next is furthering efforts to guide Slovenia to clinch a berth in the 2027 World Cup, following a 1-1 start in Group H of the European Qualifiers, and then make a bid to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

“Together we have made important achievements, but at the same time we are well aware that there is still space to improve and where we need to take a step forward,” mentioned Sekulic.

“Our goal remains clear. To build a competitive, cohesive, and stable national team that will represent Slovenia with character, discipline, and pride,” he added. “The next challenges are demanding and unpredictable. But I believe in this group and the direction we are heading. I will continue to do my job with all my energy, responsibility, and respect for the rich Slovenian basketball tradition.”

Following possible participation in the World Cup and Olympic Games, Slovenia will enter the next international cycle among the co-hosts of EuroBasket 2029, alongside Estonia, Greece, and Spain.
